Faro

Faro is a low rise whitewashed City to the east of the Airport on the Algarve in southern Portugal.

Unfortunately a large number of Algarve tourists simply head for the popular beach resorts and never set foot in this small and compact city.

The last time we were there we spent an afternoon wandering around the shops and back streets. This is enough time if you just want a quick glimpse but to have a really good "mooch" about I would allow a day.

The city centre is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets that provide good shelter from the hot sun. The streets are lined with cafes / restaurants and a selection of international and local shops.

Clothes shops such as Zara and Mango seem to be everywhere but if you look further than the modern glass and chrome plated stores you will also spot the small local craft shops.
